ampersand international arts is thrilled to announce two solo shows opening Friday, March 22nd through Friday, April 26th, 2019, welcoming back long time exhibiting artist Jeff Morris in his new exhibition Bark and introducing Jennifer Stuart in Microstates, her first solo show in the Bay Area. Morris applying graphite and Stuart manipulating ink and paint, their works on paper place patterns and spontaneity under a microscope in extraordinary ways.
Jeff Morris : Bark
Returning to ampersand international arts in his solo show Bark, Oakland based Jeff Morris focuses his practice on straight lines & irregular shapes. His works of graphite on paper, as well as his installations of found objects, mimic expanded views found in space photography and geological formations. His geometric works seem to imitate photocopies of peeling woods, allowing subtle traces of his process, Morris lends an extra crust to his meticulous configuration on shifting sheets.
Jennifer Stuart : Microstates
San Francisco based Jennifer Stuart, presents her first solo show in the Bay Area, Microstates. In this collection of works, the elements of time, energy, growth, decay, life and death are represented by the layering of automatic mark-making and controlled patterning. Surfaces are sanded, glazed over, scattered with air, and engulfed with water in order to create a feeling of movement and synthesis, adding a depth that reads as both a memory and a vision. Stuart is drawn to the mysterious and complex worlds of the unimaginably large and small and the commonalities they share.

Recent group shows include the Drawing: the beginning of Everything, Albright-Knox Gallery, NY (2017); Together, We Make Things Happen Gallery 16, San Francisco (2017); and Fertile Ground: Art and Community in California the Oakland Museum of California (2015).
